MITSUI EPT™

EPDM Rubber

Applications detail

A high-versatility EPDM Rubber

Mitsui EPT™ is an Ethylene-Propylene-Terpolymer produced by Mitsui Chemical’s advanced catalyst technology. Available from either Metallocene or Ziegler-Natta Catalyst systems, Mitsui EPT™ is a high-versatility EPDM Rubber, specifically tailored to exceed our customer’s most demanding requirements. The product is available in standard bale, friable bale, or pellet form.

The outstanding performance of Mitsui EPT™ is designed at the molecular level, derived from the company’s core competencies of catalyst design and polymerization technology, and supported by a global team of experts. Key properties of Mitsui EPT™ include:

  • Chemical Resistance
  • Cold Temperature Resistance
  • Electrical Insulation
  • Heat Aging Resistance
  • Processability
  • Weather Resistance
Glass Run Channel

The weather and ozone resistance of Mitsui EPT™ is excellent, surpassing most rubbers due to its chemical structure. In addition, Mitsui EPT™ can be blended with Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR) and Natural Rubber (NR) which have lesser resistance, in order to significantly improve these characteristics. Mitsui EPT™ is therefore used in a variety of automotive and industrial parts, including:

  • Electrical Wire Sheathing
  • Glass Run Channels
  • Grommets
  • Lamp Seals
  • Roofing Applications
  • Tubes & Hoses
  • Weatherstrip
  • Window Seals
  • Wire & Cable

Related Products

Mitsui EPT™ is an EPDM rubber, an ethylene-propylene-terpolymer. The polymer backbone of Mitsui EPT™ is a stable, saturated hydrocarbon which inhibits the main chain from degrading even after exposure to sunlight or high concentrations of ozone for extended periods of time. A key comparison may be made to the unsaturated polymer backbones of diene rubbers, which consequentially have lesser weather and ozone resistance. Mitsui EPT™ may be blended with these diene rubbers to significantly improve these properties.

Mitsui EPT™ Polymer Structure

The saturated hydrocarbon backbone of Mitsui EPT™ is inherently stable, inhibiting degradation from exposure to sunlight or ozone.

EPT™ Polymer Backbone

Diene Rubber Structure

The unsaturated hydrocarbon backbone of these diene rubbers is vulnerable to the effects of sunlight and ozone. Therefore, these materials have reduced weather resistance, and must be fortified for outdoor applications. Rubber formulators can blend Mitsui EPT™ into these diene rubbers to significantly improve these properties.

Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR)
Natural Rubber (NR)
Butyl Rubber (IIR)

Heat and Cold Resistance of Mitsui EPT™

The heat and cold resistance limits of Mitsui EPT™ surpass other types of rubber due its chemical structure. The stable, unsaturated hydrocarbon backbone of Mitsui EPT™ provides excellent heat aging resistance. Consequentially, the product may be used in relevant applications for longer periods of time compared to Chloroprene Rubber (CR) Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR) or Natural Rubber (NR).

Heat Aging Measurement

Chemical Resistance of Mitsui EPT™

When compounded and cured to OEM specifications, Mitsui EPT™ displays excellent properties as a Wire & Cable Jacket material. The corona resistance of Mitsui EPT™ exceeds that of Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR), Natural Rubber (NR), or Butyl Rubber. Additionally, the arc resistance of the product is excellent.

When compounded and cured to OEM specifications, Mitsui EPT™ displays excellent chemical resistance against solvents with relatively high polarity, such as alcohol, ketone, glycol, and is also resistant to aqueous solutions of inorganic salt, acids or alkali.

Mitsui EPT™ is an EPDM rubber that offers ease of processability, excellent chemical, weather, and heat aging resistance, cold temperature performance, and electrical insulation properties. These characteristics are well suited for automotive and industrial applications.

Mitsui EPT™ is used in a variety of automotive applications including:

  • Belts & Hoses
  • Glass Run Channels
  • Grommets & Gaskets
  • Weatherstrip Sponges
  • Window Seals
